Government’s Ongoing Efforts to Combat Illegal Activities in the Region
Government authorities have seized approximately one thousand kilograms of cassiterite, 140 liters of fuel, and a Starlink antenna. The administration’s focus on disrupting the logistics of criminal groups operating in the region has been evident since the establishment of the Government House in Boa Vista on February 29th of this year. Over the past five months, 59 individuals have been apprehended.
Furthermore, law enforcement officers have confiscated and rendered useless 18 aircraft, over 72,000 liters of diesel, 467 engines, 54 Starlink antennas, 38,000 kilograms of cassiterite, and an additional 10,848 kilograms of gold. Looking ahead, the government aims to solidify the removal of invaders and expand public policies to enhance the autonomy of the Yanomami people, particularly in terms of healthcare and food security.
Nilton Tubino, Director of the Government House, emphasizes that without mining activities, there will be more room for the federal government to implement initiatives in support of indigenous causes. ‘Significant support is still needed to restore the Yanomami people, as the devastation caused by mining, such as mercury contamination and disease spread, coupled with years of neglect, has left a legacy of desolation. It is through tireless work that we seek to change this reality,’ stated the director.
The Government House has reported a notable decline in illegal activities in the region due to the implemented measures, along with an increase in the costs associated with illegal mining operations. ‘There has been a 73% decrease in mining alerts in the Yanomami Indigenous Land during the period of January, February, March, and April 2024, compared to the same timeframe in 2023,’ stated the administration in a release. ‘Moreover, the expenses related to illegal mining operations have surged by 40%,’ added the Government House.
